Our Story: Stella & The Bakery Cafe
A small, traditional cafe on Manchester Street. Stella runs it day to day.
The business was Ernill’s before Stella took it on in 2005. Anything from the bakery side (pies, loaves, cakes) is still baked at Ernill’s in Bury; we stock and serve it here.
You’ll get bacon, bread and coffee on the go most mornings. Stella opens before the busy spell, sets the tables and works through the jobs she’s always had on this street.
It’s a traditional cafe: local food where we can source it, plain-sized plates, wooden tables, bits on the walls she’s collected over the years. A lot of people who come in she knows by name, including how they take their tea.
If you want to know what’s on the counter today, ring Stella on 07484 066777 and she’ll say what’s in.

“Lovely little cafe. The toast was perfect with real butter, great coffee too! Great selection of cooked food, cakes, pies etc at reasonable prices. The lady who was working had been there for years, she was lovely and friendly. We will definitely be going again.”
“Brilliant traditional Bakery. Great selection of breakfast, breakfast sandwiches and hot pies also cold salad sandwiches. Lots of traditional cakes to choose from all from a traditional local Baker. Definitely will call in again when passing.”
“We popped in to while away a rainy half hour with tea and cake. The array of local delicacies was a real delight and the two we tried were beautifully fresh. Friendly clean, comfortable, and with pleasant staff. An added bonus was being able to walk out with a loaf of regular bread made on the premises.”
“Called in on the off chance passing through town. OMG cakes are amazing. 12/10”
“Lovely staff and good food, coffee is really nice too!”
The best traditional cafe in Heywood
We’ve been the traditional bakery Heywood on Manchester Street since Stella took over in 2005 — the same burgundy shop front, the same counter, and the same straight answers when you ask what’s hot. Locals treat us as their breakfast cafe Heywood OL10: full English, bacon cobs and tea in a mug before work or after the school run. We’re an independent cafe Heywood in the old sense — no chain, no app, just hot pies Heywood from the warmer and bread from Ernill’s in Bury. Step off the heritage train and you’re opposite us: opposite the ELR at 118 Manchester Street, so you’re never far from a pie and a brew.
